There is a lots of bold choices in the design of Via Porta, a coffee shop in Mont Albert, an eastern suburb of Melbourne. Yet the result is a space that above all invites. “It’s the kind of place you can really settle down,” one juror said. Intended to evoke the narrow alleys of Italy, the floor is paved with rock falls from various vendors and meticulously adjusted to create a unique, textured warmth. Sand stones set the tone for the lovely earth color palette of the space, creating a tactile and intimate feel. Some materials used here are rare in contemporary interior design, such as the thick glass used for a large communal table at the front of the room. The flow from the dining room to the retail area to the counter encourages interaction with the space and allows customers to interact with the business in multiple ways.
The client’s brief was to rejuvenate the existing three-story commercial property to provide the local community with a vibrant and vibrant restaurant and deli – Via Porta. Drawing on the linear nature of the site and the clients’ Italian heritage, the design references the picturesque
and the narrow alleys of Italy, lined with restaurants and food stalls, rich in culture and activity and covered in texture. The design seeks to evoke a familiar feeling that resonates with southern Italy. The backrest was looking for a smart and versatile design to present in equal measure a restaurant-restaurant and a delicatessen and a proven retail offering. The answer is rich in detail but at the same time clean and refined, exuding a contemporary elegance and sophistication that complements the dynamic European product line that line the shelves of intricately detailed merchandise.
