Singapore, November 18, 2022 – DBS has opened the doors of DBS Better World Cafea new 11,300 square foot employee cafe that aims to inspire the DBS team to do their part for a more sustainable world through food.

Erwin Chong, Group Head of Corporate Real Estate Strategy and Administration at DBS, said, “At DBS, we are advancing our sustainability agenda through multiple avenues, and that includes embedding sustainability into the fabric of our operations. In conceptualizing DBS Better World Café, we challenged ourselves to create a differentiated employee experience that goes beyond the functional. We hope that by incorporating elements of sustainability into as many aspects of coffee as possible, DBS Better World Café can serve as a beacon of inspiration for our employees and guests, and perhaps even encourage them to become advocates for sustainability in their own lives.”

Located in Tower 3 of Singapore’s Marina Bay Financial Center, DBS has incorporated a host of new sustainability features into the cafe’s operations:

Sustainable kitchen

  • DBS worked with local catering company Chilli Padi Holding Pte Ltd to curate a menu using ingredients sourced from local farms and suppliers with responsible farming practices. These products include cage-free chicken and eggs that are “Cruelty-Free Certified” by HFAC.[1]BAP labeled fish[2] aquaculture and mushroom farms without pesticides.

  • DBS has partnered with Chilli Padi to create kitchen job opportunities for disadvantaged people at local social enterprise The Social Kitchen. Discussions are also underway to provide internship opportunities for students studying at APSN[3].

  • Bettr Barista, a social enterprise supported by the DBS Foundation as well as Singapore’s first Certified B Company[4]also opened a coffee bar offering drinks made from responsibly sourced coffee beans.

Minimize the carbon footprint

  • With its experience in the development DBS Newton green, Singapore’s first net-zero bank building, DBS deployed occupancy-based lighting and air conditioning systems along with energy-efficient appliances to minimize the café’s energy requirements. Heat pumps have also been installed in the kitchen to exploit waste heat generated by refrigerators and freezers to produce hot water.

  • Only eco-concrete certified by the Building and Construction Authority of Singapore has been used for all café screeds. To avoid generating unnecessary embodied carbon, cafe furniture was recycled or repurposed from other parts of the bank where possible, while cafe walls and artwork were made from of recycled waste.

Giving new life to food waste

  • In line with the bank’s Towards Zero Food Waste initiative, DBS has deployed food composting stations for employees to dispose of leftover food, diverting food waste from Singapore’s shrinking landfills. All tableware and take-out packaging used at the cafe is fully compostable, making food composting even easier.

  • DBS contracted Aperion Twin Gem Biofuel, a local company specializing in used oil recycling, to convert used cooking oil from the kitchen into biofuel to power the cafe’s backup generator.

Patricia Lee, Director of Chilli Padi Holding Pte Ltd, said: “Committing to sustainability is not just a commitment – the collective effort of like-minded partners is more important than ever as we look for ways better and innovative ways to move towards a more sustainable future for generations to come. We are pleased to partner with DBS to push the boundaries and bring our first sustainable kitchen concept to their employees.

Chong added, “We are grateful to embark on this journey with an ecosystem of like-minded partners who share our vision for a better world. DBS Better World Café is a living experience of how the employee experience can be merged with sustainability, and we look forward to new collaborations as we continue to introduce new spaces and concepts within the café in the months to come.”
