Delight yourself with the magic of Moonbeam coffee

Pittsburgh is filled with hundreds, if not thousands, of cafes serving a variety of moods. You’ll see the minimalist cafes, cafes with plants and greenery everywhere, puppy-friendly shops, and more. The options are truly endless for coffee vibes. A unique cafe that you never get tired of is the Moonbeam Cafe located in the Oakmont neighborhood. This mystical and artistic cafe is the one you will want to visit!

Moonbeam is on the main street of Oakmont and is next to Urbanä, one of our favorite shops that we mentioned in a previous article. In fact, these two companies were once in the same storefront. Since then, Moonbeam has transformed their space into a cafe that sells unique outlets and hosts vendor pop-ups! When you arrive at Moonbeam Cafe, you will first see their adorable purple and gold logo which is just a taste of this cafe’s theme. When you walk in, you immediately feel the chic, mystical energy of each piece of pop culture artwork from the walls to their signature purple velvet sofa. We caught up with the owner, Nina, and she said the idea for the set was easy to pull off because it’s basically what the inside of her brain looks like – she’s been dreaming about it for years!

Let’s talk coffee now! Honestly, our personal favorite has to be a tie. Depending on the mood, opt for either a vanilla lavender oat milk latte, or a half lavender half matcha latte. If you can’t tell, we love lavender! Moonbeam always offers new creations like its current April menu with two CBD-infused drinks. The first of these drinks is a mocha named Reefer Headed Woman. This drink is a cinnamon-cayenne spiced mocha infused with CBD. The second drink is a latte similar to one of our favorites! Purple Haze is a draft matcha latte, infused with lavender, organic honey, and CBD. Two other specials this month are the Got Munchies, a homemade organic banana chocolate chip syrup mixed into their signature latte, and the Up In Smoke, a smoky cardamom and homemade organic vanilla bean infused syrup. in their signature latte. Hurry up before the end of April to try one of these awesome craft creations!

With Moonbeam’s fun menu filled with cool drinks, it’s hard to decide what to order, so we asked the experts! Nina and one of her baristas make these drinks all day, so we asked what their favorite drinks were and here’s what they said:

Nina: “I get asked that ALL the time! While I love creating these unique drinks, I often enjoy a simple cup of delicious black coffee (roasted by my friends at DeFer Coffee Roasters) or, if I feel like it, a plain oat milk latte topped with a pinch of cinnamon.

Brooke: “Mine is a 12oz orange spice latte with whole milk!”

At its founding, Moonbeam was inspired by a traditional Italian café, but with Nina’s unique twist. She is a naturalist at heart, which is why she decided to include the retail section of her cafe which sells some of her favorite natural and local products. In fact, 90% of Moonbeam’s retail offerings are made right here in Pittsburgh! Some of the natural products you will find are bath salts, body butter, essential oils and sage. In the retail section, you will also find handmade products from local vendors. Pictured are granny clutches and scrunchies made by Crocheting For Costumes.

As mentioned earlier, Moonbeam Cafe not only has a retail section, but also hosts vendor pop-ups to support local businesses! This idea came to Nina about a year after they opened. When we asked Nina how she came up with this new feature at Moonbeam, she answered the following:

“It was in the middle of COVID when businesses had to get super creative and crafty to keep guests coming back. I also loved that it was beneficial for the seller as well. Since the start, we’ve helped launch more than twenty-four new businesses, most of them women-owned. I am SO proud of that.

When Moonbeam started, Nina never knew how successful it would be. She said, “I didn’t expect people to respond to Moonbeam the way they did. People from all over the world come daily/weekly for their favorite Moonbeam latte and advertise us on social media. In such a crowded industry, Moonbeam has stood out for many and continues to impress. By creating a coffee experience that appeals to local vendors, locally sourced and natural products, and carefully crafted beverages, Moonbeam has found its place in the Pittsburgh coffee scene. Nina said she owes much of her success to her amazing customers, vendors and support system. She couldn’t imagine Moonbeam being what it is today without her friends, family, boyfriend, and kill team!

With Nina’s ambitious spirit, there is no doubt that Moonbeam Cafe is only set to grow! As they enter their third and fourth years, the sky’s the limit! Be sure to stop by for a delicious specialty coffee or something classic, they do it well. Also, don’t forget to be ready to take pictures as the decor is one of a kind!
