Kiwi Coffee Cafe in Orlando, Florida

0

Another week, another Build-Out of the [checks notes] absolutely bustling coffee town of Orlando, Florida, home to [re-checks notes] one of the most interesting cafe scenes in the country, all of a sudden. Today is a new boutique inspired by all things Antipodean, in a refreshed trailer with a bucolic view. It’s Kiwi Coffee.

Build-Outs of Coffee 2022 are presented by Dripos, Dona and Mill City Roasters. Build-Outs of Coffee 2022 is sponsored by La Marzocco, Pacific Barista Series, Acaia and Marco Beverage Systems.

As told to Sprudge by John Palino.

For those who don’t know, can you tell us about your company?

We are a custom built gazebo from a 14 foot trailer set up in the beautiful downtown park and lake. We carved it to look like a building.

The kiwi is a New Zealand bird and we have a New Zealand flair. I think New Zealand and Australia have done an incredible job in the cafe sector. They are hard to beat and I lived there for over 24 years as a cafe and restaurant owner. This is where I learned after NY what a real coffee was.

We start by roasting our own coffee, making morning pastries, muffins, cupcakes, cookies, and we have a mixed ice cream in which the customer can choose what they want in and on top of it. We will also have the New Zealand pies such as Chicken and Mushroom, Beef and Cheese and Egg Tart. A quick grab-and-go pie. We will also make hot dogs, two sizes with several toppings.

There are a lot of children in the park and one of our staff is an actor so he will be running a free children’s theater in the afternoon for children. Another member of staff is an artist and she will work with local children teaching them art.

We don’t have a big menu but we’ll see how it goes once we open. We are the only booth in a busy park so we hope to do well.

Can you tell us a bit more about the new space?

This is built in a 14 foot trailer. We even roast coffee in the kiosk. It is placed on a beautiful lake called Lake Eola. There are several thousand people a day walking around the lake. But there will be times when 150,000 people walk around.

What is your approach to coffee?

Create an amazing mix that we love. Teach with great taste and introduce new items to locals.

Machines, coffees, special equipment lined up?

We roast on a Roast Master fluidized bed roaster. Our espresso machine is an Astoria Gloria. We make our own ice cream waffles which we bake in a Moffat convection oven, and something very special is also our ice cream mixer which blends your choice of ingredients to mix it up.

How does your project consider sustainability?

We try to buy the right products, especially when we are in a park with swans and other birds.

What is your target opening date/month?

We hope to open within the month.

Do you work with craftsmen, architects and/or creatives that you would like to quote?

I teamed up with my cousin who, like me, has been in the business for many years. Myself living overseas for a long time, I had a TV show called The Kitchen Job. It’s on Prime as well as Tubi TV.

Thanks!
