Otley Road in Headingley is renowned for its reputation as a weekend pub crawl, but at the start of the famous ‘Otley Run’ is an often busier establishment with a different clientele in the morning and evening. ‘lunch time.
The ‘Loaf’ brunch spot offers plenty of outdoor seating with a lovely view of the leafy Far Headingley area, where local business owners Katy and David have settled.
Set back from the main road, Loaf offers a welcoming family atmosphere with the option of sitting inside a spacious indoor area where it is cooler, quieter and darker.
During the visit, the table staff and those behind the counter were both attentive and friendly, accommodating specific dietary requests.
Choosing an ‘Nduja Toastie’ from the menu showcased the best of bread cooking, with lightly spiced nduja sausage paste, chopped salami, mild mozzarella and broccoli pesto in between toasted fresh sourdough bread.
A generous portion and side dish of seasoned potato cubes certainly helped alleviate the limited options on the menu as the cafe waits for a fix to its gas supply, when a fuller range of options return.
To wash down the hearty midday meal, there was a light and refreshing locally brewed lager “Hold Fast” from the Ridgeside Brewing Company.
While liquor options were limited, the range of specialty coffees, teas and juices were more than accommodating – perfect for a visit on a Saturday morning stroll.
For canine visitors, Loaf also offers refreshments on the café’s outdoor terrace.
The terrace is separated from the main driveway on Otley Road, with a raised stone wall and a decorative fleur-de-lis fence, making it suitable for pets and young children.
A coffee to go complemented the afternoon dinner and at £16pp for a generous sandwich, side order, specialty drink and said coffee, Loaf represents good value.
