Michigan’s Best Local Eats: Lucky Sushi Cafe in Grand Haven serves artisan sushi and Japanese-style dishes

GRAND HAVEN, MI – Lucky Sushi Cafe has been attracting lovers of freshly prepared sushi, Japanese-style dishes and classic drinks to Grand Haven and surrounding areas since opening in 2015.

Owner Rose Li operates the business, located at 1705 S. Beacon Blvd., a short walk from sister restaurant Fortune Cookie.

At the beginning of its creation, the cafe was coined the Lucky Tea Cafe; primarily focused on loose tea varieties, matcha, bubble and hot teas, as well as bistro-style breakfasts, soups and desserts.

Li, with the help of his family, added sushi to the menu in 2016, changing the name to Lucky Tea & Sushi Cafe, according to their website.

It didn’t take long for sushi lovers to flock to the cafe, which quickly became a local favorite for a variety of specialty sushi and tea.

“I’m Chinese and in our culture we love seafood,” Li said. “Everyone loves how we prepare everything fresh and how we always put our customers first.”

The customer base continued to grow, Li said, and she felt the business deserved expansion by opening a store next door. She officially opened Lucky Tea Shop at 1705 S. Beacon Blvd. in 2019.

“Bubble tea is very popular, and I felt a little bad that we kept everything in one place,” she said. “So that’s why we decided to make it more convenient for the customer who might just want some tea. It’s fast service for them.

Customers looking for a bite to eat can head to Lucky Sushi Cafe for some of their top sellers, like the six-piece pork gyoza for $5.95 or the chicken hibachi lunch special for $13.95.

Other items on the menu include monthly rotating specials, like the November Fried Hot Pepper Roll for $19.50 or the White Tuna Tempura Roll for $16.50. Each specialty is served with miso soup and house salad.

For customers who want to try the tea shop next door, a variety of bubble teas, signature lattes, smoothies, milkshakes and more are available for tea lovers.

Li touts the space as comfortable and relaxing, ensuring guests are greeted with smiles and attentive customer service once they walk through the door.

“I want our customers to feel welcome and grateful to be here because we always have a smile to greet them when they dine or order takeout with us,” she said. “I really appreciate that our loyal customers have supported me for so long.”

Lucky Sushi Cafe’s hours of operation are 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday through Saturday, and 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Lucky Tea Shop is open from 10:20 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Saturday and from noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday. The store can be reached at 616-846-6888.
