ST. LOUIS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–August 29, 2022–

Starting today, Panera Bread begins testing artificial intelligence technology in drive-thru lanes with the goal of improving and enhancing the customer experience. With support from OpenCity, select Panera bakery cafes in the greater Rochester, New York, area have implemented OpenCity’s proprietary voice AI ordering technology, called “Tori”, for steering wheel controls, with the aim of maximizing efficiency and increasing control speed. Patrons of Panera Bread cafes in Greece, NY (800 Greece Ridge Center Dr) and Webster, NY (935 Holt Rd) are the first Panera locations to experience this drive-thru innovation.

Tori is installed at these selected locations and will take orders as usual from the drive-thru speakerphone, with Panera associates on standby to assist with any issues if necessary. Drive-thru customers can go to their Panera drive-thru, place their order as usual with the help of Tori, and pay the Panera associate for their favorite menu items at the drive-thru counter. Adding this technology to the drive-thru will help reduce wait times, improve order accuracy and allow associates to focus on freshly picking customer orders.

“At Panera, improving our customer experience is always our priority and we are using this innovative technology to enable faster and more precise ordering for each of our customers behind the wheel,” said Debbie Roberts, Vice President Executive and Chief Operating Officer, Panera Bread. . “The potential for AI drive-thru technology is incredibly exciting for us – we look forward to evaluating the performance of these tests and the possibility of extending this technology to other coffee bakeries.”

In addition to drive-thru, Panera Bread offers a wide variety of state-of-the-art ordering options, including contactless dine-in, curbside, Quick Pickup® and delivery, so customers can order their Panera favorites when and how they want.

About Panera Bread

30 years ago, at a time when fast service meant poor quality, Panera decided to challenge that expectation. We believed that food that was good and felt good, served in a warm and welcoming environment by caring people, could bring out the best in each of us. For us, it’s food as it should be and that’s why we exist.

So we started with a simple commitment: bake fresh bread every day in our café-bakeries. No shortcuts, just bakers with simple ingredients and hot ovens. Every night, unsold bread and baked goods were shared with neighbors in need.

These traditions continue today as we continued to find ways to be an ally for the well-being of our customers. This means developing a menu of soups, salads and sandwiches that we are proud to feed our families. Like poultry and pork raised without antibiotics on our salads and sandwiches. A commitment to transparency and options that allow our customers to eat the way they want. Seasonal flavors and whole grains. And a commitment to foods that are free of artificial preservatives, sweeteners, flavors and colors from artificial sources on our No-No List in Foods from our U.S. Bakery Cafes. Why? Because we believe simpler is better and we believe in serving food the way it should be. Because when you don’t have to compromise to eat well, there is only the pleasure of eating.

We also focus on improving quality and convenience. Through investments in technology and operations, we now offer new ways to enjoy your Panera favorites – like mobile ordering and Rapid Pick-Up® for takeout orders and delivery – all designed to make it easier for our clients.

As of July 26, 2022, there were 2,116 bakery-cafés, businesses and franchises, in 48 states and Ontario, Canada, operating under the Panera Bread® or Saint Louis Bread Co.® names. Panera Bread is part of Panera Brands, one of the largest casual fast food companies in the United States, comprised of Panera Bread®, Caribou Coffee® and Einstein Bros.® Bagels.
