Road Trip to the restaurant: The Cottage Cafe

WHITE HALL, W.Va. (WBOY) — The Cottage Cafe has been open in the Fairmont area for about five weeks now. The owner said she wanted to bring something new and different to the area, so she opened a Caribbean and Jamaican restaurant.

Owner Shelley Walters said she wanted to create a cozy and comfortable environment for customers to come in so they could talk, hang out and just enjoy good food.

“It’s a process because we do everything, we try to do everything from scratch, everything is more authentic, so I think that’s what they like, that they can have something different and know that the work was in there, and they’re getting something that’s going well,” Walters said.

Walters said her jerk chicken has been so popular that she is now providing free samples of every menu item that day so people can get a taste of the other things she has to offer.

Walters is a U.S. Army veteran, and so she offers discounts to veterans and others who give back to the community, like teachers, students, first responders, and seniors, all of whom receive a 15% discount every day. She said she hoped to increase that discount once she got more regular business.

“For me, veterans hold a special place in my heart, so I thought, you know, it’s veteran property, I wanted everyone to feel able to afford it too, so we’re trying to keep our price range, and we try to kind of… you know, first responders, veterans, anyone who gives back to the community, we try to help them as well,” Walters said.

Walters recently added something new; veterans can come to the cottage cafe for a free meal every Friday at 5 p.m.

Along with jerk chicken, she says her chicken curry and pastries like beef patties and coconut bread are popular menu items. The Cottage Cafe also exclusively serves Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, and Walters said you can’t find this coffee served anywhere else in the area.

Walters said those who came to eat keep coming back, but others just don’t know she’s still there. It plans to start making deliveries on November 1 and will continue to offer catering. Veterans can rent the space at a discount, in addition to others.

You can find the restaurant at 2803 White Hall Boulevard.
