While for many people, competitors like Jamba may have a lot of notoriety, Tropical Smoothie Cafe is, in fact, one of the biggest chains in the country, and it’s growing fast too.
“We are now seeing a strong acceleration in activity in 2021,” said Charles Watson, “and I think we are on the right track. We will be opening 130 more cafes. [the 99 opened] in 2020, therefore, we are a brand that grows in the future. “
Currently, Tropical Smoothie Cafe has a presence in 44 states, but Watson and his team may have their eyes on 50 in the near future. And while the chain is slated to open its 1,000th location later this year, over the next several years growth is by no means going to slow down. “Our goal is to reach 1,500 coffees by 2024. I think we’re on the right track. And it’s a brand you’re going to hear a lot more about,” Watson said.
What does the CEO of the company attribute success to? In large part to the fact that, although it is growing as a whole, it remains a local business thanks to its franchise model. “I would tell you that what ultimately drove this brand is our franchisees and it’s our culture,” Watson explained, adding, “Yes, there is a brand name on it, but it’s Bill and Sally Smith. around the corner and they “are entrepreneurs. And so how they impact the communities where they operate is a very important part.” And of course, according to Watson, the chain’s Chipotle Chicken Club flatbread is definitely a draw.
