Text description provided by the architects. Think of something easy, then find different ways to approach simplicity. Use the limited space to accommodate the complex emotions of simplicity and let the space give you special meaning during emotional interaction.

Yijian Cafe is a coffee brand owned by China NetEase (NASDAQ: NTES). It is located in Shanghai JuLu Road, where the French settled a century ago. The parasole tree makes the small western buildings on both sides of the street look rather serene. The architectural style of the place is inspired by the Sino-French apartments built in the 1930s.

In order to express Yijian’s attitude of focusing on producing high-quality coffee, we hope to create an ideal atmosphere for high-quality coffee tasting. So we created the concept of using a clean wooden box embedded in the chaotic concrete floor of the city.

The box can be opened and closed but has generally remained open, and a record player is displayed in front of the French window. It softens the tension and conflict between Yijian Cafe and JuLu Road bars, and the rotating disc of the record player represents Yijian’s handmade coffee beans.

This deliberately “contradictory” mix hopes to lighten and enliven the atmosphere. A long metal coffee bar sits in the middle of the wooden box, which in addition to serving functional purposes, also connects the wooden box to the original concrete body. The roaster is visible through a glass door, reflecting the brand’s ambitions for the future.

A simple wooden box, a long bar table, it looks simple yet complex. Walk through the alleys holding hands and smell the dead leaves of the four seasons. You will begin to feel the many emotions, in one space.
